Our Story

Youth in Motion was established in the North Shore region of Sydney when our team found a lack of services available to young people who were doing it tough. We recognised how our educational privilege and the support around us enabled us to graduate high school, something that we recognise wasn’t afforded to everyone around us.

We decided it was time for a change, and thus, Youth in Motion was created! We aimed to utilise our lived experience as young people to advocate and further the support for other young people doing it tough, by providing free tutoring, one creative mind at a time.

Our Values

Integrity

Youth in Motion values honesty and accountability within our organisation and to our supporters, recognising our limitations and remaining transparent in all our processes.

Education

Youth in Motion is dedicated to the education of young people and the continuous education and growth of our management team. We also aim to utilise our platform to educate the broader public through advocating for issues that align with our mission.

Collaboration

Youth in Motion values the importance of collaboration, within our organisation, with other organisations, and with young people, whose voice is crucial in informing and improving our services.

Authenticity

Youth in Motion aims to remain a passionate and authentic organisation. We pledge to centre and support marginalised young people, valuing lived experiences in informing everything we do.

Intersectionality

Youth in Motion recognises that different types of marginalisation and discrimination, resulting from structural policies and social inequity, are densely interwoven. We understand that each person’s experience is a unique and complex interaction of these axes of oppression.

Sustainability

Youth in Motion recognises the importance of environmental sustainability, funding sustainability and the sustainability of our volunteers, in building a strong backbone for our organisation.

Our Story

2016

Fresh out of high school, our initial founders started 'The Learning Project' which is now known as our main program at Youth in Motion! Initial research and development was started and we began at the Naremburn School as our pilot.

2017

We finally became 'Youth in Motion Inc' and rebranded our whole presence and operating systems to what it looks like today. We also dedicated our time to becoming a registered charity within Australia.

2018

2018 marks the beginning of our amazing Art and Writing Competition in which beautiful artworks and writing were published into our annual magazine (2017-2020).

2019

2019 was the year in which we deepened our roots within our wider community by partnering up with local Youth Services such as @pheonixhouse and @streetwork.

2020

As COVID19 hit Sydney, we sadly had to close our face to face tutoring... only to immediately provide online tutoring for all of our students.

2021

2021 marks the year of expansion for YIM as for the first time, we now run both online and face to face tutoring for our students!

2021 Strategic Goals

1. Lay foundations to deliver online and in-person tutoring as key services

After a successful online tutoring program in 2020, YIM is ready to deliver both online and in-person tutoring as a baseline to all students.

2. Grow our online presence

With more young people connecting online than ever before, we must continue to grow our digital presence and reach more students.

3. Deliver tutoring to more vulnerable students statewide

Some of the most vulnerable students are often located in our regional and rural areas. YIM can step in where that extra help is needed.
